Amelia Mary Earhart (born July 24, 1897; disappeared July 2, 1937) was an American aviatrix and author. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

This picture shows Amelia Earhart standing in front of the Lockheed Electra in which she disappeared in July 1937. She was 173cm tall (5'8").

★ Pictured on an 8¢ US airmail postage stamp in issued in her honor 24 July 1963.
★ Charter member of the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1973.
★ Worked as a nurse's aide in a military hospital in Canada during World War I.
★ Subject of Still Missing: Amelia Earhart and the Search for Modern Feminism by Susan Ware.
★ Was declared legally dead on January 5, 1939.

The first person to fly solo over both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, when she completed the trip from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California in 1935. Her trip took 18 hours (today it takes a little over 5 hours).

During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10-E Electra, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.
