Franz Marc The Blue Horse Poster Print 1911 (Blue Horse II)
Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 to 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.
His mature works mostly depict animals, and are known for bright coloration. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun.
In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. His work is now exhibited in many eminent galleries and museums. When up for auction, his major paintings attract large sums, with a record of £12,340,500 ($24,376,190) for Weidende Pferde III (Grazing Horses III).
In 1911 Marc drew in his sketchbook no. XXIV a pencil drawing about the size of a postcard entitled Young Horse in Mountain Landscape, which already shows the composition of the later painting. In the same year he transcribed the sketch in great detail into a large oil painting.[2]
The blue color stands in the color theory of Marc and the Der Blaue Reiter group for the spiritual principle. The painting was initially not understood and was laughed at or even spat upon.
This work (Blue Horses) which represents three vividly coloured blue horses looking down in front of a landscape of rolling red hills, is characterized by its bright primary colors and a portrayal of simplicity, and a profound sense of emotion.
Franz Marc Quotes:
"Art has always been and is in its very essence the boldest departure from nature. It is the bridge into the spirit world." "I never, for instance, have the urge to paint animals 'the way I see them,' but rather the way they are... The way they themselves look at the world and feel their being" "Blue is the male principle, stern and spiritual. Yellow the female principle, gentle, cheerful and sensual. Red is matter, brutal and heavy and always the colour which must be fought and vanquished by the other two."
