Open Window, Collioure is one of Henri Matisse’s most celebrated Fauvist works, painted during a transformative summer in the small French seaside town of Collioure in 1905. It captures a vivid view from Matisse’s hotel room—bright flower pots on the windowsill, a riot of color outside, and sailboats bobbing in the pink-toned sea.
This painting marked a turning point in Matisse’s career. It was created during his collaboration with André Derain, as they pushed the boundaries of color and expression. Rather than using natural tones, Matisse applied intense, saturated colors straight from the tube to evoke emotion and light. When it debuted, critics were shocked—but it helped define Fauvism, a revolutionary movement that forever changed modern art.
