Vintage Japanese Art Print Matsumoto Hoji Sad Green Frog Circa 1814
This sad frog / toad belongs to a category of Japanese painting known as Zenga, or "Zen picture." For Zen monks, painting provided a medium to express their own Zen experience and pleasure.
Not much is known about Matsumoto Hoji, the artist who most believe painted the frog. Others believe the frog to have been created by Kawanbe Kyosai, another Zen monk who died in 1889.
