In 1769, the brilliant 18th-century British polymath Joseph Priestley introduced "A New Chart of History" along with a detailed prose explanation, supplementing his acclaimed Lectures on History and General Policy. Complementing his earlier "Chart of Biography" (1765), which he dedicated to his friend Benjamin Franklin, these innovative charts were designed to help students clearly trace the connections between historical events and organize them into coherent periods and divisions.
