Nichiren Buddhism (Japanese: 日蓮仏教) is a branch of Mahayana Buddhism based on the teachings of the 13th-century Japanese Buddhist priest Nichiren (1222–1282) and is one of the Kamakura Buddhism schools.
This japnaese woodblock painting depicts Nichiren Calming a Storm in Kakuda, as he travels to exile on the island of Sado in 1272.The Print is based on the original Japanese woodblock print by the famous artist, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1797 - 1862. Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting.
