This was originally a Japanese woodblock by famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (the great wave of Kananga).
The Mansion of the Plates (Sara yashiki), from the series One Hundred Ghost Stories (Hyaku monogatari), shows a scene from a Japanese legend about a maid named Okiku who was bound and thrown down a well by her master after breaking a precious Korean plate.
The canvas print depicts a ghost emerging from a well.
