"Café Terrace at Night," painted in 1888 by Vincent van Gogh, is a mesmerizing oil painting that captures the vibrant nightlife of Arles, France. Also known as "The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum," it was initially exhibited in 1891 under the title "Coffeehouse, in the evening (Café, le soir)."
Creation and Location:
Van Gogh created this artwork in mid-September 1888, setting up his easel at the northeastern corner of the Place du Forum. Although the painting is unsigned, Van Gogh described and mentioned it in three of his letters. The scene features the brightly lit terrace of a popular coffee house against the contrasting darkness of the rue du Palais. In the distance, the tower of a former church, now the Musée Lapidaire, adds to the depth and historical context of the piece.
Visitor Experience:
Today, visitors can stand where Van Gogh once painted, thanks to a refurbishment of the site in 1990 and 1991 to replicate the iconic scene. The painting also depicts a lighted shop and the surrounding trees, though Van Gogh chose to omit the nearby Roman monuments.

"Café Terrace at Night" is currently housed at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
