About the Painting: "Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate)" is a poignant oil painting created by Vincent van Gogh in 1890 while he was in Saint-Rémy de Provence. Van Gogh painted this piece during a period of recovery following a severe health relapse, just two months before his tragic death, widely believed to be a suicide.
Historical Background: This artwork is inspired by an earlier lithograph, itself derived from a pencil drawing titled "Worn Out." Van Gogh made this drawing in 1882, featuring Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland, a pensioner and war veteran he met at a local almshouse in The Hague. The drawing was part of a series of studies, and Van Gogh had initially created a similar drawing and watercolor the year before.
Artistic Inspiration: The initial inspiration for "Worn Out" came from Hubert von Herkomer's print "Sunday at the Chelsea Hospital," which depicted an old war veteran slumped in death. This print later became a celebrated painting, "The Last Muster," displayed at the Royal Academy. Van Gogh encountered this influential work during his time in England in 1875.
This masterpiece reflects Van Gogh's deep empathy for the aged and weary, capturing profound emotion and vulnerability.
