Petrus Plancius (1552 – May 15, 1622) was a Dutch-Flemish astronomer, cartographer and clergyman. Plancius was one of the founders of the Dutch East India Company, for which he drew over 100 maps.
He also published journals and navigational guides and developed a new method for determining longitude.
Plancius' contacts with the Dutch East India Company lent him access to all the latest geographic information, which makes this map extraordinarily accurate for its time.
This is the first time Korea appears as a peninsula, not an island, and Japan is also shown.
