Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque Period painter born in 1632. He specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. During his lifetime, he was moderately successful, but produced relatively few paintings and was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death at age 43.
