Woman with a Hat by Henri Matisse is a vibrant portrait of his wife, Amélie, and one of the most important works of the Fauvist movement. Painted in 1905, the piece shocked critics with its wild, non-naturalistic colors — purples, greens, blues, and reds used freely to shape her face and clothing.
At the time, it was a radical break from traditional portraiture. The brushwork is loose and expressive, focusing more on emotion than realism. When first exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris, the painting caused an uproar. Critics mockingly called Matisse and his circle “fauves” — wild beasts — but the name stuck and Fauvism was born.
